Sorry. I'm an asshole. I shoulda told you that I wasn't finished in the prep section, but, you know, whatcha gonna do? So anyways, what follows is a list of stuff you should do or avoid. Keep in mind that if you don't follow these guide-lines, you will totally screw up your site and will die and got to hell. ( Just kidding, but you will want to kill yourself when you see how much longer it takes to do a web page when you don't follow this advice.)
If you have it, use Notepad to write your page. If you use Word, for example, you'll have to worry about a lot of things. First off, you'll have to make sure that you open a new, REGULAR document, NOT an html file. I repeat, DO NOT open as an html file!!!!!! If you do, Word will think that you just wanna write some text and it will convert it itself as html. Resist the temptation to do such a thing. You're never gonna learn anything if you let the machine do everything for you! Plus, this way is much more limited than the good old fashioned way. Second, you have to set the margins to none. Repeat: NONE! Third, and of UTTER, UTTER IMPORTANCE, save your document as TEXT ONLY ( *.txt). TEXT ONLY! One more time: TEXT ONLY!!!! Then you'll have to change the extension to *.html in your file manager. Trust me, it's way easier in Notepad.
You may be wondering soon: "Where should I put my page (or site)". For now, you should just do your stuff for your viewing only, but when you'll be ready, you can check out the section: "Where can I get some web space?" But like I said, now's not the time. As a great man one said: "First you must fill your head with knowledge; then you may break ice with it.".
I know there are tons of html editors out there, but start using one just yet. You'll just stay like the idiot you are and never learn anything.
